Near completion of all animation (except compositing lip sync)
I Have animated the 'quote off' without mouths, ready for the lip sync to be comped in.
Paris also needs lip sync which won't be too difficult she has one line! not 8 or 5!
Completion of scene 07-10 is on it's way, these scenes have minimal animation, and I must say 07_sc has been my favorite to animate.
So now compositing the animation in to the scenes and rendering like a mad man wait a mad woman is on the cards!
Feeling a little bit like this being so close to the end (Pearl in scene 7)

PS; Press kit is all printed and ready to be picked up tomorrow, I will be collecting it before class, 11;30-5;30, what a day, can't get it after so must go pick up before.
So excited to see DVD case, cover, booklet and posters and post cards! Hoozah!
Oh yeah and when I get a moment I must print logo and glue on brown paper bag and print dialogue list off oh and the 2 digital still & a secret surprise which if you follow my blog you should know what it is (I keep repeating what I have to do for the press kit) but once it is done full concentrate on the final touches of POW!

So I have been working on lip sync so close to having all the 3D mouths done just a matter to re sizing angling them on the right angle and comping in.
Hoorah!
I would upload the playblast of the lip sync, but it is not working reallllly slow internet at the moment... my apologies.
Other than that finalizing shots is on it's way, fantastic.
PS; press kit fail... due to it having to be ready in a week, by time I order the tote bag it may not get here on time you see I am in a pickle... all my post gets sent to my old address and that put my plan right down the crapper.
I shall have to present it in something else, thoughts are a giant brown paper bag with the film logo.
Other than that all that has to be done is, 2 digital still prints... uh I will self print, pick up printed goods, 10xdvd included booklet with bio, cv, cast crew etc, (will only be handing in one dvd and my film burnt to the disc, playable in computer and on the telly 'dvd player') 2xposter and 8xpostcards.
And burn my showreel again?... or re hand in the one I handed in earlier?
Really would like to avoid burning another copy considering I got them professionally printed, need to save these pups for the future!
So here here to getting things done. sorta kinda, if things don't go to plan always have a backup plan!
Which will be the brown paper bag! - all sorted.

This one I have added Paris on the left hand side, and cat and celery are moved up a bit...

Most time will be spent finishing off Pearl of wisdom blogging may have to wait until it is done.

I have been animating all day, all of Paris is nearly animated! All she needs is lip sync! I am doing a dope sheet for this and replacement mouths.
This is the heart falling.. thought I'd add some blood squishing out of it.

Re doing Paris...
She was too clunky done in toon boom studio frame by frame.
So she is being re done, in the long run the effort will be worth it, more appealing Paris and possible and most definite a smoother animation.

ps; Hoorah for Melbourne cup which = a day off to work on Pearl!

Lip sync
Jack has made mouths in Maya for lip sync, Brilliant this is the answer to my problem!
Thank you Jack!
I have changed all wav files to 16bit because Maya does not like 32bit. Good thing about this I can listen to the wav file, in toon boom I could not play in the timeline you clicked and a separate window would pop up... and what use is that, so changing the mouths and syncing to the line that was said was non existence although there is a automatic lip sync but it doesn't do a great job, 'looks out of sync'.
Now to get all my shots ready and animate them without mouths!? Except when they are silent they will have a little toon boom mouth.
This is going to take quite some time to finish off the shots ready for lip sync.
One thing I know that I am daunting Maya 2012 interface I hope I know where everything is, I have not touched Maya in quite some time.

Lip sync isn't going all that well, I am running out of time and yeah, my fault.
Thinking I need to go old school and use dope sheets.
That is an possibility, so time consuming but this may have to be done.
I must say lip sync is great and all but when you feel pushed for time it's the last thing you want to do.
A total of 10 lines for Pearl and 5 for Wesley
Paris has a line, but hey that may be said 'off screen'
And lemon aid girl does say her line off screen.
someone wish me luck!
Here is a picture of Wesley with out his Beard, looking young and youthful.

Press kit epiphany!
So I started to make a giant clam shell, to then find out the press kit has to be something you can reproduce... (I could make a bundle of giant clam shells) anyway besides the point.
The giant clam shell idea is scrapped in the bin it's rubbish, if you threw it on a rubbish pile the rubbish would say 'ha, there goes the neighborhood'.
It needs to be something that can be reproduced yet I can put all the press kit assets in is what I am aiming for, I could hand in a booklet/ card or something along the lines of that, but I like idea of a press kit being presented in something that the assets can be in all in a neat package.
Two words that solve that problem; TOTE BAG!
Pearl of wisdom tote bag, which can be re produced and all aspects of the press kit can go in!
The dvd, posters, post cards, showreel, CV an biographical information of key cast and crew, promotion still images, plush toy and I think that is all that will be in it, I would love to go all out, but the funds are low, should of started that cake stall a long time ago...
Anyways Press kit problem solved!
I best get snapping to the design of it, with it being due in two weeks along with my film!
Things take time to print/order and get delivered & once the press kit is on it's way less to worry about!
Pressure is on!
Other than this epiphany I have been animating like crazy.
Stay tuned for WESLEY!!! dun dun daaaaaaar.....

Pearl has so many walk cycles!
I am attempting a double bounce walk... but I have class soon and won't get time to finish it off this morning, waking up early and animating is the bee's knees!
Staying up late and animating, not so good.
As soon as I get home more toon boom, and at school I shall make some new shots in AE... and then once that is done start to create Pearl of wisdom post cards for my press kit, yes I should be animating but while at school I need to use my time wisely considering I am animating mostly at home on toon boom other things can be done when I carry my mac with me.
ps- Pitch shifting on Pearl needs to be adjusted and the end of the sentence cuts off (must of got carried about I shall zoom in and be very careful what I cut), not to worry this can be re done within half an hour.

So today I was going to go into class but I decided to stay home...
Reason being I had to solve a problem!
The problem being exporting in Toon boom, you see... I would export my animated pearl as a PNG file but it would have a 'black background'... no alpha... so I looked up some sites and presto a forum had tha answer I had to go to the network window and change some settings!
Being new to this program this year I am yet to still learn a few things but the beaut about choosing 2D this year it's been a learning curve!
Hooray for learning!
IT WORKED SEE BELOW FOR A IMAGE OF WHAT WORKED!
(still yet to colour grade/effects this a test BUT... a test that worked!)
And I am un happy with the run cycle I re did... re do again? YES!... g'day endless hours on the computer!

Hooray, all the voices are now recorded and diced and sliced and named... lip sync awaits...
But even before that more animation.
My days consists of endless hours on the computer.
Today I re did the run cycle from 05_sc... run cycles are a challenge well any walk/run cycle is a challenge.
I am needing to fix up many shots and create numerous numbers of shot like 01_sc and 2 other shots (same background but cropped slightly)

Pearls run cycle...
Speaking of run cycles I best go for a run or walk...

Pearls walk cycle will be improved!
Thanks to Jack and his feedback on my animating.
What it was lacking was contact!
I admit it, I did not pay attention to the feet! Very bad!
Also little blocks to help guide the contact so his walk cycle will flow better.

Animating Wesley!
Wesley is a wisdom tooth who is old and shaky, animating Wesley shaking all over the place is challenging!
None the less, it is going okay, lip sync, my my might leave that for now...!

Today I also plan to also animate 05_sc (when pearls silhouette runs)

Run little Pearl, run.

Snippet of the beginning of his walk cycle which floats and pops, and which I need to re do, horrid just horrid.
On another note deleting key frames has been a hassle, for some reason F7 does not delete key frames which it should!
So if I make a mistake it's hard to correct. little things how they turn into big things!
Other than that I am concerntraiting on getting all characters that are toon boomed done and dusted because I have to do animating in toon boom at home on my PC, because that is where the program is well the right version; Toon boom animate pro 2, which unfortunate I do not have for my mac which is portable and can be brought into school.
So when I get back to school I hope to be comping Pearl into the scenes.
School = After effects the production
Home= Toon booming animating Pearl and Wesley
And gee I hope the editing suite isn't full and busy, like it always is near the end of the year because everyone is trying to get there films done!
Would like to do the editing in final cut! On lovely big screened i mac (glasses not needed then) or even sync the sound with pro tools, BUT may not have time for that.
If all else fails premiere will do! hell even after effects but still can't quite tweak the sound you have way more control in FC or Prem.
It is the way I have to work, and it just makes sense!
Tomorrow awaits, until then.

Making a pearl move has it's perks, it is amusing seeing him walk and interesting making him move because he is round doesn't really have a pelvis/hips or distinctive shoulders his character animation is going to be plain, I hope what I have done has some sort of character to it, I shall exaggerate even more if not.
Ps; Pearl has little cute stumpy legs ^_^

Hardrive was handed in at the office thank goodness!!!
So chilled out now!
Now back to work.
Today I will overlook my running comp with sound, and iron out what doesn't work with it...
I know for a fact I am needing that new background and to move the background characters around.
And no need to draw them on there sides as the shots I have don't really require that, also time is ticking I have to make a few dicissions here and there to get this production done!
Anways back to it!

Pearl you little beauty!
Animating Pearl today so much fun a challenge but fun!
Hope to have it as a png sequence of Pearl for the first scene.
Tomorrow what shall I do?
Finish off running comp (just need to render) then put it all back together.
And save voice overs as wav files and break them up in to vowels.
that should keep me busy tomorrow.
And after class to the city (if I am not dying from the flu) I will go to purchase fabric for Pearl the plush toy (Clegs, has meters of felt and it's not nasty cheap thin stuff you buy like in the craft stores that come in rectangles its quality!), ah time I know how I will get time for this plush toy just carry the fabric, scissors, thread and a sowing needle with me constantly and when ever there is a twiddle your thumbs moment sow I shall.
What should I focus on in the next two weeks;
Animating only! (I say)
and press kit on the side as well as showreel (which is close be being complete).
Sowing when there is a twiddle your thumbs moment!
Pearl taking his first steps... ah how this project in ways has become my baby.

Hard drive is missing, which has voice acting on it, not good times.
Despite the hardrive loss, I will have to wait until tomorrow to see if a good samaritan has handed it in at holmesglen, if not, back to the drawing board more work to be done and more money to be spent, that I don't have.

So setting up characters in toon boom and what happens I unplug my computer!
Small confined spaces, and cables don't mix! I just moved my computer chair not realizing the power cord from the power adapter was wrapped around the wheel.
Lucky everything saved!
I was Bob Mckeeing all over the place though!
Here is Pearl ready to be put into symbols (from from view) then he will I will place the IK tool in his arms and legs, brilliant!

So what have I learned today; do not be lazy and duplicate Left arm and make it into the right.
Here is just a little test front view when Pearl walks out the door.

Breakthrough!
With fast tracking the animation move over toon boom studio... animate pro 2 is just the best!
Forward kinematics is the go!
Basically in a nut shell, I'm a weak drawer, and doing traditional then cleaning up is going to take a long time and with me not being fluent and well any good at traditional and not really having time on my side, a simple way will do the production justice... you can also set up a IK in toon boom animate pro, gah why did I not do this in the beginning? (if only it wasn't my first time doing 2D)
Maybe because I am on my Mac constantly and not my PC but times have changed! You see I have toon boom animate on my PC and studio on Mac, now time on PC will be much much higher as I need to animate like there is no tomorrow from now on!
So having to do most the animation at home now, class time will be dedicated to comping the animations I have finished off at home and editing etc, and animating those background characters that are in after effects which I could of and should of done in toon boom animate.
Having ten characters is extreme, only 2 more to do and it will be down hill from there to the finish line.
Then lip sync which I have sourced tutorials for! another win!
Image below pearls arm!

PS; Today was in lin craft and BAM ideas came flowing like a waterfall!
You see still got the press kit in the back of my mind (always) and I found a few items that are going to help greatly with the presentation of the shebang. (shebang a 1920's term meaning; the whole thing)
Also I have post cards on the way 50 of them! But after sending off the image to be printed I remembered I started a website for pearl but oh I still don't have the domain, of course pearl of wisdom.com is taken, there where some I liked but yet again the free one is okay I just have to have webs in front of the .com... not the end of world.
With all the other things I have to do on top of my animation I bet lots of people are going to say 'gee you look tired' which is a nice way of saying you look like crap.
Anyways, back to it!

Final scenes (but still ONE more another shot for 03_sc which hope to have before the holidays so I can match the animation with the background)
Also I have started to place the sound with the scenes so I will have a running comp with sound.
Am also tweaking little things like camera's in scenes and beginning with after effects animated elements.
The opening scene is near completion, may need some help with camera's in after effects.
AND I am worried that duplication in after effects will stuff my production up I must make sure everything is separate and has it's own comp! I know this is where I went wrong with 01_sc, mistakes oh how they take up time you would rather be using more efficiently!

same scene as 02_sc... getting re used, here Pearl will be a little alco!

Lemon aid girl, (a little pig)

Note; I have counted ten characters... now where did I put that straitjacket!?
And I need 1 liter of pva (for press kit)

Finalizing the design for press kit, and I did a breif budget and if everything was to be printed profesionally dvd's, posters, showreel dvds, mugs, tote bag, badges, stickers, key rings, post cards still images and a plush toy. All that would roughly cost $268 and 70cents!
I knew I should of started that cake stall along time ago!

Press kit on the mind!
Wednesday always with promotions, ah how I must finalize the design!
In the next two weeks lock it in, no returns, bulletproof! Plus vistaprint is having a sale!...

Drew this in class, (bad scan, must of been using a H or 2H, should be using a 2B)
Was just jotting/drawing down what I had in mind...
PS; Have a webpage now a swell... BUT don't have the domain yet, (funds are low) one day soon maybe I will buy the domain? Perhaps!
http://www.pearlofwisdomfilm.webs.com/
(Under construction, hope it will be done within 3-4 weeks well getting to a stage where it is a fully functioning jam packed with info webpage!)
Must animate now... bye bye

So the pixel problem resolved in 01_sc...
Ended up drawing the flower in toon boom @ 1920by1080 and not in photoshop.
Had a discussion with Jack about how to go about a few things aka; lip sync, and the flowers Pearl caries with him, whether to animate or parent.
Decided to go with toon boom for the lip sync and the flowers.
Why? More control and freedom but a lot more animation.
It won't have such a flat look... would like to steer away from flatness make the main characters pop a bit, who knows maybe that is my 'style' but soon we will see...
Now just need to tweak camera's again for 01_sc. Ah after effects it's a love and hate relationship.

Seems like the backgrounds are forever being fixing up! (fixing 01_sc... AGAIN)... just when I think AH beautiful it's done...
Problem after problem... mistakes grass has red bleed in it etc...pixels, wrong ratio.
*NOTE; If I had done 2D last year some of these mistakes and lack of 'knowing what to flipping do' would be ironed out, figuring stuff as you go along sucks, but hey that's how you learn, but wish I already knew.*
Can't wait until it's bulletproof, and NO MORE of these imperfections that are certainly going to be VERY noticeable on the big screen!
Back to it!... waco

So here is a test from the first scene... establishment shot needing to be longer perhaps a 3sec shot of the house and birds chirping then followed by a fade in with the music.
Needing to slow down the fly in just a tad and add in more shake to the camera (it's meant to be a bee flying towards the flower) Bee SFX also need to be included layed over the top of the 'theme song'
The flower looks bad must fix also including the titles, I wanted shakey 'Pearl of wisdom' but this just looks well bad :( I would love to re do it.
ps; music isn't synced proper, coz well you see I dislike syncing sound in after effects, it be well crap. (personal preference)
Just David and Margret-ed (the movie show) my own work, pointing out all this is great.
Wish I could get it right the first time but that's just madness, live and learn!
Needing to slow down the fly in just a tad and add in more shake to the camera (it's meant to be a bee flying towards the flower) Bee SFX also need to be included layed over the top of the 'theme song'

The title...

Today for the second time since I got my DVI cable it is working the way it should with the right aspect ratio. I usually shrug and let it be when doesn't work because I think 'hey better than worrking off a 13" screen' I connect it to my PC monitor so I can work off a bigger screen (21.5') and still have a 19" to work from my PC multitasking, it's grand.
If it works like this from now on it will make working among after effects and toon boom that little bit better. it's nice to have bigger screens to work from especially with time-lines that have up to 30 elements or more. (03_sc is crazy like that, colour coding and the bigger work area will help heaps)
Opening titles; One concern with the zoom into the flower is a bit pixelated, I had it set on 300dpi and well you get that, had trouble with the camera in after effects aswell and parenting and adding a wiggle, don't get me started, but with trying to do things you learn.
For my first 2D production, hey I'm doing alright, going to give myself a pat on the back.
So right now with pearl working on 01_sc and 03_sc AND 02_sc have been worked on.
02_sc animated the bus and the bus doors.
04_sc - 010_sc are next... but really what I need to be doing is pencil tests for the main characters;
Pearl, Wesley and Paris (wait Paris is done, except her mouth and behind shot)
Have began Pearl exiting door in 01_sc.
Still so much to be done.

Whats this? Another Character!?... Yes it is! I don't know if he has a name but I call him Mullet.

Note; Colour coding characters, the background & other elements in scenes Reeeaaaalllllyyyy helps!
(And listening to Frank Sinatra whilst working away.)

Composite characters into scenes and this, look at this!
Ridiculous!
Got to improve my eye for detail!
Lucky I didn't go on a tangent and animate... must wear glasses at all times from now on!
fixed it... and now it is comped in... yessss!
Elephants applying make up! Ha!

But having trouble parenting!? Hmmm I will save first, take a note and deal with that later aiming to have characters comped in, puppet tooled and ready for
A-N-I-M-A-T-I-O-N... well puppet tooling!?
I was just thinking if I was to toon boom these 'background' characters like Pearl, Wesley and Paris... it would be a stretch to get this production done, after effects you time saver you!
